We Prevent Costly Software Rot

You may have a dated software installation that cannot be easily updated or the system is dependent upon an old version of some system software (e.g. an old or obsolete database, non-standard database) or the cost to upgrade the installation is just too costly. Keep in mind that, if the practice of the development of any system includes the use of custom software and an upgrade with still another custom system, the system will be in the same dated state again in a few years. Several years ago I coined a phrase for this process as “Software Rot.”  Large and seemingly healthy companies have collapsed in this industry as well as other industries because the burden to continue the custom software cycle became too costly for the company and its customers to fund. With the advent of inexpensive off shore development, the reduced cost has extended the cycle and moved development toward custom software with the end result being the same. In reality, it will most likely be much worse. It is just too easy, and seemingly justifiable, to say “Just get the job done.”

You may think that you have too much invested in custom software and hardware in your installation to change systems. Keep in mind that the software has to be updated or replaced due to its outdated features and cost to support.
